British Bank goes online
June 10th, 2001- Saudi
British Bank is to open its SABBNET Internet bank offering transfer of
money between accounts, credit card information, bank statements,
forex rates and personal loan applications, reported ITP.net. Managing
director David Hodgkinson said the bank aimed to provide customers
with a choice which meets their increasingly sophisticated
requirements through a variety of channels.
Courier service to
handle requests for traffic services
RIYADH, 2 June —
The traffic department has authorized a courier service company to
accept applications from Saudis and expatriates for various services.
SNAS Worldwide Express will receive applications for renewal of
driving license and registration card, transfer of car ownership and
exchange of old number plates, and will take them to the concerned
traffic office for processing.
Saudi
lion’s share of Arab trade
May 30th, 2001-Oman, Saudi Arabia and the
UAE shared 47.2 per cent of inter-Arab trade in 1999. An Egyptian
Ministry of Energy and External Trade report said Saudi Arabia's
exports to other Arab states were 53.2 per cent of total inter-Arab
exports, with the UAE at 41.1 per cent and Oman at seven per cent.
Saudi imported 15.4 per cent of total inter-Arab imports, the UAE 11.5
per cent and Oman 10.8 per cent.

USD25bn Saudi gas role
May 31st, 2001-Regional and international
banks are queuing up for a role in the USD25bn foreign investment in
the Saudi gas sector. Yesterday Saudi finance and economy minister
Ibrahim Al Assaf told a conference in Riyadh that the gas initiative
was having a tremendously positive impact on the economy. Bankers said
the huge liquidity of Saudi banks would allow them to take an active
role in funding the projects
New draft
Saudi stock market law
May 31st,
2001-A draft law to regulate the Saudi stock market to enforce modern
standards of disclosure and transparency could be issued before the
end of the year, officials of the Saudi Monetary Authority told
Reuters. They said the new law would assist the raising of capital for
some of the major projects now underway in the Kingdom. Economists
reckon Saudis hold up to USD1tn abroad, which could be repatriated for
local investment.
NCB launches
online brokerage
May 30th, 2001-The National
Commercial Bank has launched an online brokerage service for
international securities in partnership with the Pershing division of
Donaldson, Lufkin and Jenrette which was acquired last year by Credit
Suisse. The brokerage, www.alahli.com,
also offers access to online research, news and stock quotes.
Saudi food
merger
May 30th, 2001-Saudi
Arabia's Food Products Company approved an offer in principle from
Ajwa Group of Food Industries to merge to form a regional food
production and marketing company worth USD160m, Reuters reported. Food
Products said its board had agreed to merge in order to boost the
company's competitive edge.
Kingdom cuts import
duties to 5 percent
JEDDAH, 28 May — Saudi Arabia
yesterday slashed customs tariffs on imports from 12 to five percent
in a move widely welcomed by businessmen as a major boost to the
country’s economy that would strengthen the Kingdom’s competitive

concessions granted
RIYADH, 22 May — The
Shoura Council yesterday decided to award the Tabuk Cement Company
concession to exploit gypsum from the Raghafa Hills in Dhuba. It also
endorsed a request from Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) for
concession to exploit gold ore and associated metals in Balgha in
Qassim. This was disclosed by Dr. Hamoud Al-Badr, secretary-general of
the consultative body. The meeting was chaired by Shoura President
Muhammad ibn Jubair.
Air-India
launches direct flight to Calicut

launch of the first nonstop flight from Jeddah to Calicut last night.
Mr. Samir S. Maddah, deputy director general of the KAAIA, cut the
ribbon to mark the formal launch of Air-India’s second nonstop
flight from Jeddah to India in a span of five days.

Jizan technical college
JIZAN, 22 May
— Jizan Governor Prince Muhammad ibn Nasir laid the
foundation stone for a SR78 million technical college here yesterday
designed to provide education to 3,300 students annually. Muhammad ibn
Suleiman Al-Dhalaan, governor of the General Organization for
Technical Education and Vocational Training, said the college’s
capacity could be increased to 6,000 students. He said in the initial
stage the college would offer studies in general topics, mechanics and
electronics. In the second phase, courses in electrical, chemical and
construction engineering, trade and management will be offered.
