The following is the text of the
keynote address delivered by Prince Faisal ibn Turki ibn 'Abd
al-'Aziz, Advisor at Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Petroleum and
Mineral Resources, at The Development of Middle East Energy
conference sponsored by the Royal Institute of International
Affairs, Chatham House, London, 12 February.
Arafat Day on March 4
The
standing at Arafat, the climax of the annual pilgrimage, will be on
Sunday, March 4, the Supreme Judiciary Council announced yesterday.
The
standing at Arafat, some 15 km east of Makkah, is held on the 9th of
Dul Hijjah, the second day of Haj, which starts March 3.
The
Council said the new Hijri month of Dul Hijjah started on Saturday
Feb. 24 and Eid Al-Adha would be celebrated on Monday, March 5.

GCC, EU ministers to hold free trade talks in
Bahrain
Foreign ministers of the Gulf
Cooperation Council countries and the European Union will meet in
Bahrain on April 23-24 in a renewed bid to promote trade and
investment relations. The two sides will also examine the
possibility of endorsing a free trade agreement.
KSA Rank 1st in
foreign investment among Arab states
Saudi Arabia attracted the highest
level of foreign investment in the Arab world last year at $4.8
billion, or 54.7 percent of the total investment in the region,
according to the latest issue of Saudi Economic Bulletin, released
here by the Saudi British Bank.

Internet site on Haj to be launched
Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed will attend the formal launching
of “Bawwabat Al-Haj” or the Haj Portal on the Internet, at the
Principality Building in Mina on Saturday after Maghreb prayers. Dr.
Fahd ibn Abdul Aziz Al-Tuwaijri, director general of the Hafr Co.,
which is responsible for developing the website, said the site www.tohajj.com
would be a present from the company to the guests of Allah.

PILGRIMS ARRIVE IN THE KINGDOM
A record 1.5 million people from
abroad are expected to perform Haj this year, according to Haj
Minister Iyad Madani. The Passports Department said more than 1.3
million people have already arrived from abroad for the annual
pilgrimage starting Saturday.

trade soars
Trade volume between Israel and
Jordan grew by over 80 per cent last year, despite the political
violence during the Q4 period according to a statement from the
Israeli embassy in Amman. Israeli exports to Jordan stood at
USD38.5m in 2000, an 83 per cent jump, and Jordanian exports to
Israel leaped 80 per cent to USD37m.

Bahrain mulls
USD2bn Syrian deals
Director of the Syrian investment
office, Mohammad Sarakbi told Reuters that Syria was discussing
investments worth USD2bn with Bahraini businessmen, including a
USD1.3bn aluminum smelter and private bank. Lebanese investors are
also interested in the banking sector, he said.

STC inks USD667m
loan
Saudi Telecommunications has
completed the USD667m four-year loan announced last December with a
syndicate of regional banks. Mandated banks are Arab National Bank,
Riyad Bank, Saudi British Bank and Arab Bank. Also in the syndicate
are Citibank, Al Jazira Bank, Saudi Investment Bank, Saudi Hollandi
Bank and the Arab Investment Company. The loan is for Telecoms and
Internet infrastructure.

Sumitomo, Saudi funding
Sumitomo is setting up a
Saudi-Japanese consortium to finance a USD2.2bn power and desalinization
plant in the Kingdom, reported the Arab News. Officials said 15
Japanese firms were involved and a number of Saudi banks. Sumitomo
won the concession to build the plant in Jubail Industrial City last
month, and is now finalizing the funding package.

Desalination projects in Saudi Arabia
The Saline Water Conversion
Corporation has announced that, in 1419/1420 AH, there were 27
desalination stations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, producing 775
million cubic meters of desalinated water, providing more that 70
per cent of the required drinking water.
Projects at the
Holy Places of Arafat and Mina
In line with the directives of the
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, the
Ministry of Public Works and Housing implemented this year a number
of new projects at the Holy Places of Arafat and Mina, at a total
cost of more than SR 700 million.
Electricity generation in Saudi
Arabia
The real electricity generating
capability is expected to reach 70,000 megawatts by the year 1440
AH, according to reports published recently by the Ministry of
Industry and Electricity.
Girls’ education in Saudi Arabia
According to statistics published by the
General Presidency of Girls' Education, in 1420 AH, there were more
than 2 million female students and 200,000 female teachers and
administrators at more than 13,000 educational institutions.

Saudi Arabian construction contract awards boomed by 48.5 per cent
to USD2.8bn in the first three quarters of the year 2000, according
to figures published by the National Commercial Bank. The Bank
forecasts total construction spending of USD64.3bn over the next
three years. It highlighted increased oil revenues and structural
reforms to the economy as reasons to be optimistic.
