New cases of Rift Valley Fever

Riyadh, 10th October 2000
Twenty-five new cases of rift valley fever (RVF) were reported from Sunday evening up to Monday evening. They included 23 cases in Jizan region and two cases in Asir region. There was not a single case of death, according to a statement issued here on Monday night by the media department at the Ministry of Health. It said that two patients had recovered - one in Asir and another one in Jizan region.

The statement noted that the total number of cases of RVF reported up to Monday evening, 9th October, since the start of the outbreak, is 316. One hundred and six people have recovered while 64 patients have died. The department exhorted the citizens and residents in Jizan region to take the appropriate preventive measures including avoidance of mosquito bites and direct contact with animals

Mechanism for donations to Al-Quds fund set up in the regions

Riyadh, 10th October 2000
Upon instructions from the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz, Prince Naif bin Abdul Aziz, the Minister of Interior, today ordered the regional governors to invite donations from the public for the Al-Quds [Jerusalem] fund in support of the Palestinian intifada.

Prince Naif, who is also Chairman of the Higher Information Council, also ordered the Ministry of Information to launch a robust media campaign to raise finds for the Palestinian victims.

King Fahd orders the opening of al-Quds fund

Riyadh, 9th October 2000
The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz today ordered all governors of administrative regions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to take the necessary measures to gather donations from the public for an Al-Quods [Jerusalem] fund in support of Al-Quods intifada (uprising), it was announced here today.

Making the announcement during his visit to Palestinian casualties at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh earlier today, Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, said the order is in line with Saudi Arabiaís firm stance in support to the Palestinian cause, including Al-Quds, against Israelís brutal hostilities.

Commencing the fund-raising campaign, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdul Aziz today donated 30 million Saudi riyals. And Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Deputy Premier and Commander of the National Guard, donated ten million Saudi riyals for the heroes of the Palestinian intifada.

Saudia takes delivery of new plane

Jeddah, 9th October 2000
The Saudi Arabian national carrier, Saudia, has received a new Boeing 777 / 200 plane to bring to 54 the number received out of the 61 planes purchased in December 1997 from the U.S. plane manufacturer Boeing, it was reported here today.

The report, made by Dr. Khalid bin Abdullah bin Bakr, Saudia Director General, said Saudia has so far received four Boeing 747/ 400, 20 Boeing 777/200, 26 Boeing md/90, four Boeing md and eleven cargo Boeings.
