A Briton fighting extradition from Dubai to Saudi Arabia
Dubai, Feb

A Briton
fighting extradition from Dubai to Saudi Arabia on alcohol-related
charges has appealed against deportation after entering the UAE
illegally. Gary Dixon, who also uses the name Gary O'Nions, entered
after trekking across the desert from Saudi Arabia where he had been
arrested and released on bail last April.
He was arrested again at Dubai airport in June for attempting to bribe
an immigration official to allow him to leave for Cyprus. He was
jailed for six months, then to be deported on January 10. However, he
remains in custody pending the outcome of a Saudi request for his
extradition.
Dixon's appeal against deportation will be decided by the Dubai
Cassation Court on February 24. Dubai Attorney General Ibrahim Bu
Melha said the Public Prosecutor is studying the Saudi request for
extradition on charges involving the illegal manufacture and
distribution of alcohol.
He allegedly ran the British Empire Club, an illicit drinking den
popular with Western expatriates before it was closed down by Saudi
police last year.
