The SGI machines, which deliver
unparalleled system performance to creative and technical
professionals running either Windows® or Linux® operating systems
(OS), will be displayed in conjunction with SGI's new partner in the
Kingdom, Networks for PC Services.
The SGI technology showcased at Saudi Computer 2001 will include the
SGI 230, 330, 550 and 1200 workstation ranges, as well as Zx10
professional machines and SGI's award-winning flat-panel monitors. The
primary benefits that the new range of SGI workstations bring to the
Saudi market are: unrivaled graphics and system performance,
intelligent system design, flexibility and expandability.
"The adoption of the Internet, and the increase in the size and
scope of graphics and multimedia files used in business today, mean
that Saudi organizations have an increasing need for
graphics-intensive hardware," said Fadi Abi Akl, business
development manager of workstations and Intel processor-based servers
for SGI in the Middle East & North Africa.
He added, ""Following our workstation launch in the Kingdom,
SGI's next initiative will be to introduce SGI's 110 and 1200 ranges
of Internet servers, specifically designed to support demanding
solutions including Internet infrastructure, Web serving, messaging
and e-commerce."
"SGI is participating in Saudi Computer to give end-users in the
Kingdom freedom of choice in today's Internet-based economy - they can
choose the operating system that meets their business needs while
receiving the highest levels of power and performance available
today," Abi Akl concluded.
Networks for PC Services is a professional services organization,
bringing world-class consultancy and support for IT infrastructure in
the Kingdom.
"SGI is the world leader in high-end graphical computing, and we
are witnessing an increased demand for SGI's technology and expertise
in Saudi Arabia," noted Fawaz Al-Mahraj, Managing Director of
Networks for PC Services. He continued, "Together with our local
consultancy and support, we are able to provide clients with a total
solution. Saudi Computer 2001 is the ideal opportunity to inform the
Kingdom's IT users about the professional capabilities and benefits
they will receive from our partnership."
Industry-leading Technology
The new SGI workstations on display at Saudi Computer 2001, including
the Silicon Graphics® 230, Silicon Graphics® 330 and Silicon
Graphics® 550, accelerate OpenGL® graphics functions such as
hardware transform and lighting, texture mapping and anti-aliasing,
allowing users to bring increased realism to 3D models. These features
are essential in the professional Windows NT® market space, and are
available for the first time on a workstation for Linux users. The new
systems are based on Intel® Pentium® III and Pentium III XeonTM
processors and have been certified for the Microsoft® Windows NT®
4.0 and Red Hat® Linux 6.1 operating systems. These workstations are
on display within the Networks for PC Services stand at "Saudi
Computer 2001."
SGI is also launching the new Silicon Graphics Zx10TM visual
workstation with Wahoo TechnologyTM, powered by an Intel® Pentium®
III 933 MHz processor. Real-world application benchmark performance
confirms Silicon Graphics Zx10 status as the world's fastest Windows
NT® OS-based workstation, and its blistering speed can also be seen
first-hand at the Networks for PC Services stand.
Bringing Differentiated Graphics Performance to Windows NT Users
In keeping with its graphics heritage, SGI has delivered a workstation
designed to meet the demanding needs of technical and creative
professionals in the digital content creation, computer-aided design,
government, medical and scientific research markets. SGI customers
running Windows NT can take immediate advantage of enhanced
performance on these new systems.
First Linux Workstation Optimized for Graphics
The family is the SGI's first workstation offering for Linux users,
and the industry's first workstation designed from the ground-up to
accelerate OpenGL 3D graphics in hardware on the Linux operating
system. To date, many developers have waited to port their graphics
applications to Linux due to minimal OpenGL driver support. By
providing hardware acceleration for OpenGL graphics on a
high-performance Linux workstation platform, SGI systems provide an
ideal platform for graphics software developers and users.
"Linux has lacked a well-integrated 3D graphics API, so the
platform should benefit from the availability of optimized OpenGL
graphics," said Pia Rieppo, principal analyst for workstations at
Dataquest, a Gartner Group company. "Optimized OpenGL graphics
should have a positive impact on the availability of third-party
applications for the Linux OS, enabling graphics workstation users to
take advantage of the reliability and cost-savings of the Linux
operating system."
"SGI's new systems provide an excellent platform for creative and
technical professionals in both the Windows NT and Linux
environments," said Tom Copeland, Vice President, Workstations
and High Performance Systems for analyst group IDC. "In addition,
the optimized OpenGL implementation for Linux provides an excellent
environment for developers of new Linux applications."
