Orbit signed licensing contracts to foster the development of interactive TV in the Middle East.

According to the terms of the contracts, CANAL+ TECHNOLOGIES will
supply its interactive system MEDIAHIGHWAY and its conditional access
system MEDIAGUARD and will ensure integration into Orbit's new
generation of digital set-top boxes. The DSTBs will be deployed
throughout Orbit's footprint which covers
23 countries.
CANAL+ TECHNOLOGIES's middleware MEDIAHIGHWAY will be integrated into
DSTBs which use the common MPEG-2 coding system and will be compatible
with the DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) standard now adopted by all
leading digital TV platforms in the world and conceived by a
consortium of about 300 companies. This market-led initiative has
resulted in DVB becoming a prominent and leading international
standard for technologies that enable a
higher quality and interoperable digital broadcasting.
By choosing CANAL+ TECHNOLOGIES, Orbit will immediately have available
a tremendous catalogue of interactive TV applications, many of them
capable of generating significant revenue streams. CANAL+ TECHNOLOGIES
intends to develop specific interactive applications for Orbit, such
as an interactive programming navigation tools (among which a channel
list, a video and a
radio stations mozaic), pay-per-view services and a wide range of
interactive games. To better respond to market needs, many
applications will be in Arabic.
