Plan to recruit maids from Nepal, Vietnam finalized
18th March 2001

The Kingdom has finalized a plan to recruit housemaids from Nepal and Vietnam following visits by labor officials to the two countries. The Council of Saudi Chamber of Commerce and Industry is making necessary arrangements for speeding up the recruitment process.

The move follows imposition of new conditions for recruitment of maids by some countries which have been sending domestic helps into the Kingdom in large numbers.

Nepalese Ambassador Badri Prasad Khanal said the issue had already been discussed between the officials of the two countries. The subject was raised also during the visit of a Nepalese delegation to the Kingdom last year. He said 70,000 Nepalese were currently working in the Kingdom.

Khanal said, however, that the Saudi side had not formally approached the local Nepalese mission with recruitment orders. But a chamber statement said that the National Committee for Labor Recruitment had held talks with Nepalese officials on issuing work visas directly to Nepal instead of recruiting them through intermediaries in Bangladesh and India.

The Kingdom is likely to recruit some 30,000 Vietnamese maids in foreseeable future. Vietnamese and Nepalese maids will be welcomed by Saudi families as they can be easily integrated into the local society on account of their docile and hospitable nature.

Vietnamese maids could be hired at low wages SR500 monthly, the chamber statement said.

Asked about Saudi-Nepalese relations, the ambassador said the two countries had forged closer relations. The Kingdom, he said, had funded several infrastructure projects in Nepal. Saudi Fund for Development recently extended an SR40.6 million credit facility to Kathmandu for Bagmati Irrigation Project, bringing the total Saudi assistance to SR228 million.
