Kingdom, Egypt to explore joint medical projects
Cairo, 28th March 2001

Saudi Arabia and Egypt are exploring prospects of setting up joint medical projects in their bid to achieve greater integration in the sector, Health Minister Osama Shubokshi said.

“The pharmaceutical industries in the Kingdom and Egypt are strong and we are thinking of integrating the two industries,” the Saudi minister told reporters.

Shubokshi said he would hold talks with his Egyptian counterpart Dr. Ismail Salam to explore the possibility of opening up Egyptian market for Saudi medical and pharmaceutical products.

Shubokshi is in Cairo heading the Kingdom’s delegation to the Arab health ministers’ conference at the Arab League headquarters today. The meeting will focus on combating smoking and the outbreak of diseases such as foot-and-mouth.

Egyptian Health Minister Ismail Salam underscored the strong relations between the two countries. “The visit of Shubokshi is an opportunity to further strengthen our cooperation,” he added.

Salam said Saudi Arabia and Egypt could jointly serve as a major partner for Arab countries in the health and medical sector.

“We’ll discuss with Dr. Shubokshi ways and measures to facilitate distribution of Saudi medical products in Egypt,” he added.

Meanwhile, the executive bureau of Arab health ministers yesterday supported Saudi Arabia’s candidate, Dr. Yaaqub ibn Yousuf Al-Mazroue, for World Health Organization’s Executive Council. Mazroue is deputy health minister for preventive medicine.
