Warning against modified cars

 Riyadh 7th May 2001

Director General of the Saudi Arabian Standards Organization (SASO) Dr. Khalid Al-Khalaf has underlined the importance of adherence to the decision banning imports of modified cars with steering wheels shifted from right to left. In a statement on Monday, Dr Al-Khalaf said such modified cars donít conform to Saudi standard specifications and so they constitute a serious menace to the safety of citizens and residents.

'They constitute a flagrant violation of traffic regulations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,Ē he added. He noted that the compulsory Saudi standard specification issued by the decision number 1438 in 1998 pertaining to the general requirements of the cars included a number of technical conditions.

These technical conditions stipulated that the driving wheel of the car should be on the left side, and strictly prohibited imports of cars with driving wheels on the right, he added.

Dr Al-Khalaf pointed out that modification of cars should never take place unless performed by the manufacturer.

Dr Al-Khalaf said the car-manufacturers will not accept even a slight modification to a car and refuse to accept any responsibility for problems caused by such modification. He urged citizens, merchants and importers as well as all other concerned parties to abide by the instructions issued in this respect.
