PRINCE AHMAD GIVES INTERVIEW
SANAA 17th May 2001

PRINCE AHMAD BIN ABDULAZIZ, DEPUTY INTERIOR MINISTER, SAID THE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA WELCOMED YEMENI WORKERS AND THE DOOR WAS OPEN FOR THEM WITHOUT ANY RESTRICTION.

IN AN INTERVIEW PUBLISHED SIMULTANEOUSLY TODAY BY THE YEMENI NEWSPAPER '26 SEPTEMBER' AND SAUDI OKAZ NEWSPAPER, PRINCE AHMAD SAID THE KINGDOM ENCOURAGED SAUDI BUSINESSMEN TO INVEST IN YEMEN.

ON INCIDENTS WITNESSED BY SOME SAUDI CITIES AND TARGETED SOME EUROPEANS, THE DEPUTY INTERIOR MINISTER SAID, 'THE REASONS ARE KNOWN AND THOSE RESPONSIBLE ARE KNOWN. INVESTIGATIONS WILL BE COMPLETED GOD WILLING. THE CASE WILL BE REFERRED TO COURTS. EVERYTHING WILL CLEARLY APPEAR ON TIME.'

PRINCE AHMAD EMPHASIZED THAT THESE INCIDENTS HAD NO POLITICAL CONNECTIONS. 'UNTIL NOW, NOTHING HAD EMERGED TO PROVE THIS. THE CASE WAS BUT A SETTLEMENT OF ACCOUNTS AMONG THEM. THEY HAD ABNORMAL AND ILLEGAL RELATIONS', HE TOLD THE PAPERS.

PRINCE AHMAD EXPLAINED THAT THERE WAS NO ORGANIZED CRIME IN THE KINGDOM, NOTING THAT THE ISSUE OF ILLEGAL DRUGS WAS HURTING THE KINGDOM. INTERNATIONAL GANGS WERE ATTEMPTING TO SMUGGLE DRUGS INTO THE KINGDOM, HE SAID. THERE WAS NO ORGANIZATIONAL LINK AMONG INDIVIDUALS INSIDE OR ABROAD, HE ADDED.

PRINCE AHMAD STATED THAT ISLAM REJECTED TERRORISM, NOTING SELF AND RIGHT DEFENSE AS THE PALESTINIANS WERE DOING AGAINST OCCUPIERS WAS LEGITIMATE. TYING IT WITH TERRORISM WAS CLEAR AND UGLY BIAS, HE SAID.

ON IRAQ, PRINCE AHMAD SAID THE IRAQI PEOPLE WERE SUFFERING AND THE IRAQI GOVERNMENT WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT BECAUSE IT COULD DO MORE TO IMPROVE THE STANDARD OF LIVING OF THE IRAQI PEOPLE THROUGH OIL SALES AND WHAT WAS ALLOWED UNDER INTERNATIONAL RESOLUTIONS.

ON THE SITUATION IN OCCUPIED PALESTINE, PRINCE AHMAD SAID ARAB SOLIDARITY WITH THE PALESTINIAN CAUSE WAS THE BEST SOLUTION TO CONFRONT THE ISRAELI FEROCIOUS ATTACK AGAINST THE PALESTINIANS.

HE EMPHASIZED THAT ARAB MEDIA SHOULD LEAD TO CLOSENESS AND COHESION AND NOT TO DIVISION AND DISSENSION.

HE NOTED THAT THE KINGDOM WAS SEEKING TO BENEFIT FROM THE ADVANTAGES OF GLOBALIZATION 'WITHOUT NEGATIVELY AFFECTING OUR FAITH OR VALUES'.
