Dubai, 20th January 2003: Samsung Electronics, the global leader in digital technology, today announced its plans for the Samsung Cyber Challenge Dubai 2003. The challenge is an online gaming event held in alliance with Emirates Internet and

Samsung unveiled the logo for  ‘Samsung Cyber Challenge Dubai 2003’ www.mplayer-arabia.com, the region’s premier online gaming site.

The 13-day long competition, which begins on January the 26th, will bring the best of the region’s gamers to compete against each other at the popular ‘Counter-Strike’ game. As the sponsor of the competition, Samsung has announced prize-money of Dhs25,000 to winning teams.

Mr. D.K. Byeon, Managing Director, Samsung Gulf Electronics (SGE) said: “The absence of a real online gaming event has affected the development of the gaming industry here. With the Samsung Cyber Challenge Dubai 2003, Samsung will set a new benchmark for the gaming industry, paving the way for future competitions, as well as expanding the online gaming community in the region.”

The Cyber Challenge will take place online every day at www.mplayer-arabia.com, from 4pm – 11pm, for the next two weeks beginning January the 26th, and concluding during the first week of February. Online games will be played between two teams with four players on each side. The competition is open to players above the age of 15, and is free to all participants.

In support of the Samsung Cyber Challenge Dubai 2003, Mr. Abdulla Hashim, Senior Manager, Business Development and Sales, EIM said: “Mplayer Arabia is going from strength to strength in the region as the popularity of online gaming increases. We are pleased to have this opportunity to work with Samsung in order to bring our online gamers a challenging and potentially rewarding competition to run alongside the Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF).”

Samsung Cyber Challenge Dubai 2003 will be held online under the supervision of a moderator from M-player Arabia and the finals will take place in the centre court of Deira’s City Centre Mall between February the 4th and 07th 2003.

“The Samsung Cyber Challenge Dubai 2003 will be a regular annual event alongside the DSF adding greater value to the fun of DSF. E-sports is already gaining interest in most parts of the world, and through this competition our endeavour is to transform the local cyber gaming industry into a formal e-sporting adventure,” said Mr. K.S.Vasudevan, Senior Manager, Digital Information Technology Division.
