JEDDAH TO HOST FAMILY TOURISM
FESTIVAL
FROM JUNE 13
Dubai, May 3, 2001: Jeddah 22, a six-week
festival for all the family, kicks off on June 13 it was announced today at the
Saudi Arabia stand at the Arabian Travel Market Exhibition in Dubai.
Nearly 2.5 million visitors enjoyed
last year’s extravaganza, Jeddah 21, spending Saudi Riyals 1.7 billion, while
an estimated 1.7 million people spent Saudi Riyals 800 million at the first
festival, Jeddah 20, the year before.
Visitors to Jeddah next month can
look forward to as much as 50 per cent off hotel room rates, as well as
discounts on flights and package tours to historical and religious sites in and
around the city. The six-week festival ends on July 31.
Shoppers meanwhile can take their
pick from no fewer than 25 shopping malls and numerous fascinating bazaars.
Expect plenty of great bargains, not to mention raffle draws to win luxury cars
and massive cash prizes.
“Jeddah 22 should not be missed,”
said Ibrahim Al Rashid, Head of the Tourism and Hotels Committee, Jeddah
Chamber of Commerce and Industry. “There’s something for everyone, young and
old, including theatre, fireworks, arts, culture, water sports and, of course,
great shopping. The Gold Festival is also part of this year’s activities.”
Dating back 1,400 years, Jeddah
still retains much of its ancient character with many buildings constructed in
the traditional Hijazi way making up the old city.
Located on the pristine Red Sea 75km
from Mecca, Jeddah boasts 14 museums, each packed with rare historical
artefacts and archaeological treasures. A striking fountain, which can be seen
from all over the city, is the dominant feature of modern Jeddah.
Continued Al Rashid: “Jeddah is rich
in heritage but it also has plenty to offer the more active visitor. Water
sports are a main attraction, including diving, sailing and windsurfing. But a
cruise trip on the Red Sea is definitely to be recommended as a more relaxing
alternative.”
